Behind So Energy: Malwina Piech

So Energy

What is your job title?

Finance Administrator.

How long have you been working at So Energy?

I previously worked as an Operations Specialist at ESB. I then became an official part of team So when ESB merged with So Energy in August last year.

Can you tell us a little bit about your career background - how did you first get started working in the energy industry?

I come from a business background, and have a Masters degree in international business. The position at ESB was actually the first role within the energy sector that I’d applied for - I applied for a job as an Operations Administrator, the interview went well, and I got offered the job! I’ve now been working within the energy space (at ESB, and now at So Energy) for about 3 years.

What I like is how dynamic the energy sector is; it’s changing all the time. It can definitely be a challenge keeping up at times, but it’s also very rewarding work.

Can you explain what your role at So entails?

My job is pretty varied, and every day is different. My responsibilities include monitoring our finance mailbox for invoices and queries, processing and chasing invoices, and logging and allocating credit card payments onto our system.

I also do bank reconciliation for the ESB arm of the business, which essentially means that I’m responsible for double-checking all our bookkeeping by ensuring that our invoices and business accounts match up with our bank statements.

What is the most rewarding part of your job?

To be honest, I find my whole job very rewarding; there’s progress to be made every day because there’s always work that needs to be done. I also get a real sense of achievement knowing how important the work being carried out by the finance department is.

Although we’re behind the scenes, without us the business wouldn’t be able to keep doing what it’s doing.

Is there a recent project or achievement at work that you've been particularly proud of?

I was a big part of the ESB and So Energy merger, which was a pretty massive project! I was part of the team helping switch over customers’ bills as part of the merger, and there was an awful lot of work that needed to be done. It was one of those situations where the whole team chipped in and did what we needed to do.

What do you like doing outside of work to recharge your batteries?

I enjoy hiking when I get the opportunity, as well as doing puzzles and reading. And Netflix, of course!
